How it started
A long (ish) time ago in a galaxy far, far away (the North West of England!), two Contract Administrators worked for a local council, with a particular interest in Social Housing. Their names were Alastair Moffat and Andrew Riley. Not only were they colleagues, but Alastair and Andy were developing their careers together, as well as being friends and fellow athletes, running, cycling and swimming in triathlons.
Given the opportunity to progress past their apprenticeships, Andy and Alastair gained their qualifications and worked across local councils, including Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council and Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council. They decided to set up a plumbing business, Moffat & Riley Heating, with a focus on quality over profit and working in partnership with clients, rather than merely as contractors.
Drawing on their respective strengths, the business began to grow and to ensure they remained true to their social housing interest, they diversified and expanded into kitchen and bathroom installations, construction and commercial works.
The early years
Alastair and Andy focused on creating a stable business, growing organically through delivering quality work and identifying individuals who ‘had something about them’, to build the team. They made sure every project had quality delivery at the heart of it.
They found clients and organisations who really shared the vision for the finished project, building or outcome and put everything in ensuring that was the focus of each project. Moffat & Riley became known for not just providing plumbing services but property refurbishment and construction projects. Many of those properties are homes for the most vulnerable and social housing is still at the core of the organisation.
How it’s going
We continue to invest in our staff and help them develop even further, which contributes to the continual improvement of the business. Moffat & Riley has grown organically over 20 years to provide not only heating and mechanical engineering services but also construction and refurbishment services for domestic and commercial properties and social housing across the North West.
We service contracts from £30k to over £1m, partnering with trusted clients who rely on us to do a great job, deliver on time and budget and look after their customers in the meantime. We employ over 30 people, and utilise an established, trusted supply chain who work to our values and standards. We support our staff to progress through to ONC, HND and degree level qualifications and invest in community via initiatives such as our Handyman Service and school sports events.
Our vision for the future
Andy and Alastair are grateful for the key partners and clients who have helped us get to where we are today, particularly Jackson and Jackson & Sons, Emanuel Whittaker and Great Places Housing Group, who allowed us to use their resources, created shadowing opportunities for our staff, and gave us guidance on developing our business.
Our philosophy is to, in turn, support our supply chain in the same way; providing practical help and a partnership approach, which has helped us succeed.
Our vision is to build on the good work we have accomplished, grow sustainably and deliver more great projects through Greater Manchester and beyond.
We would be delighted to work with your organisation on your project, please get in touch to talk to us about it.
